Ryan Howard Wins the Homerun Derby

In a battle between National League Eastern Division All-Stars, Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies beat out David Wright of the New York Mets in the championship round 5-4 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Howard, who barely made it into the 2nd round by hitting four golden-ball homeruns with 9 outs in the 1st round, also managed to hit the “Hit it Here” sign, winning 500 free flights for a lucky fan on his winning homerun.

Kobayashi wins again!

At Coney Island in New York, Takeru Kobayashi won the Nathan’s 4th of July hotdog eating contest for the 6th consecutive year with a record-breaking 53 3/4 hot dogs and buns. Narrowly beating out newcomer Joey Chestnut, an engineering student from San Diego, California who ate an American record-setting 52 hotdogs and buns, Kobayashi successfully defended his title in 90 degree heat and humidity and in front of over 30 thousand spectators watching the annual event. After trailing by two hotdogs to Chestnut 6 minutes into the contest, Kobayashi counter-attacked and overtook him during the last few minutes as Chestnut slowed down.

Kobayashi wins for the 6th consecutive year.

I still don’t think we’ll ever see anyone beat Kobayashi and win the hotdog eating title unless he retires from competitive eating. Even though Chestnut came pretty close, Kobayashi is still in his prime and will continue to get better.
