End of the Summer Post

Welcome back students! Wednesday was the first day of classes for everyone at the University of Maryland so I decided to do a little post wishing everyone who’s still in school good luck. The summer was too short wasn’t it? (Although every summer seems that way) It feels like only a few weeks ago that I was taking pictures of my brother’s graduation this past Spring and only a few months since I started working full-time in February. Meanwhile, I’ve taken up reading books again now that I’m not forced to read specific books for school and this Fall I’m going to start learning Chinese again after over a decade-long hiatus to focus on schoolwork. Also if anyone wants to start a non-school-related (or even school-related since I’m not a student anymore, haha!) programming project or play computer games (who wouldn’t want to) I have all the free time I want after I get back from work every day, so send me an IM, E-Mail, post a comment, or something.

Anyway, good luck everyone! More specifically all my MHS high school buddies, my UMD buddies, my CSR buddies, and various relatives around the world.

[Update 9/8/06] Oops, I forgot to finish writing up my Prison Break recap, but I’ll have it up tonight. So here’s a video of “Cockroach vs. Weatherman”

Prison Break Episode 2 Recap

Prison Break

So last week we saw the thrilling death of the first major character of the season at the conclusion of the season premiere. This week, as we saw during the preview for this week’s episode, the focus is on LJ Burrows and the continuing escape of the “Fox River Eight”. It also marks the first appearance of David “Tweener” Apolskis in season 2, but still no sign of Haywire yet. We also delve into what will become of Captain Brad Bellick and Warden Pope. Lastly we find out the significance of what the title “Otis” means.

Stay tuned next week for another exciting episode to see if Lincoln buttons up his shirt and if Michael continues to wear that dapper suit. Episodes still aren’t up to par with season 1 yet, but I think the best is still to come.

US Open 2006

US Open

It’s that time of the year for the fourth (and personal favorite) major tournament in the tennis world. The US Open, played in Flushing, NY, will also be the last professional tournament for the great American tennis player Andre Agassi. I’ve watched Andre over the years from his early days as a denim wearing “punk” to his current balding state as a 36 year old man. As the US Open comes and goes, this will be the end of an era in American tennis history. Andre is the last of a group of great American tennis players including Pete Sampras, Michael Chang, Todd Martin, and Jim Courier. Although I doubt he’s going to win it, I think he’ll still have a decent showing and make it to the 4th round where he could possibly meet Andy Roddick.

Andy Roddick at the US Open

Anyway, my picks to make the “final four” for this year’s tournament are Roger Federer and Andy Murray in the top half of the bracket and Andy Roddick (looked good coming back from injury in his first match and winning his last tournament) and Rafael Nadal in the lower half of the bracket. Then I have Federer meeting Roddick in the finals with Federer taking the title for the 3rd year in a row in 4 sets. I just don’t think anyone can beat him on a fast surface.

On the women’s side of the tournament, I have Amélie Mauresmo meeting Maria Sharapova in the top half and Nicole Vaidišová (eliminated) meeting Justine Henin-Hardenne in the bottom half. In the finals I have Henin-Hardenne beating Sharapova in straight sets.

[Update 9/1/06] Both Agassi and Roddick are through to the 3rd round!

[Update 9/10/06] Federer wins on the Men’s side, Sharapova wins on the Women’s side.

Prison Break Episode 1 Recap

Prison Break

The Fall season begins with a bang as Prison Break returns from it’s Summer vacation (same thing for students as school starts for everyone too, yay!). Today also marks the first of my TV recap posts which will include some synopsis, some opinion, some insight, and a good deal of screencaps. Overall, I thought that the season 2 premiere for Prison Break was pretty good, but not as good as season 1 yet. Running away from prison doesn’t seem as intriguing as breaking out does it? To set the scene, it takes place roughly 8 hours after their “prison break” from Fox River Penitentiary. The current groups are Michael, Lincoln, Sucre, Abruzzi, and C-Note in one group, T-Bag running around with his left hand chopped off by himself, and Tweener and Haywire each running around separately as well (Haywire might still be riding his bike with a football helmet though). All in all, these guys are aptly named the “Fox River Eight”.

Overall, I really can’t think of any other way they could start the season. It’s going to be tough to match the first season, but I really hope they pull it off. As the title of the episode says, it really is a “Manhunt“.

[Update] If you missed any episodes on TV and don’t want to download the episode via bittorrent, FOX.com has streaming episodes of Prison Break on their website. No excuse not to watch it now!

Pluto Demoted from Planetary Status

After over 75 years being classified as a planet, Pluto was demoted to “dwarf planet” status as reported by CNN.  Now we only have 8 “planets”…time for every school to get new textbooks!
