Africa is the worst represented continent at the Olympics (with the exception of Antarctica which didn’t send any athletes
). However a new contender has arrived in Togo’s new hero, Benjamin Boukpeti. After picking up the bronze in the Men’s Slalom K-1 Kayak Single (and promptly breaking his double-bladed paddle across the bow of his kayak), Ben won the first ever Olympic medal for Togo. Although he apparently was born in France and is actually only half Togolese, he still counts (but twice as much as Natalie Coughlin is Filipino). Let’s hope Mr. Boukpeti gets a comperable reward to Abhinav Bindra’s 14 million rupee ($330,000) sum after winning gold in the 10-meter air rifle.
